HIGHLIGHTS FROM SPRING 2011:_ MUSIC – A SIZZLING SPRING THAW Not that it gets too cold here in Santa B, but Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro de Cuba got the blood (and body) moving again out at Campbell Hall; the Lobero provided more glow with Sunny War, Madeleine Peyroux, Kurt Elling & hot band, Rickie Lee Jones, and the Taj Mahal trio, which really raised the temperature. __Sings Like Hell gave us eye-popping polyester and mind-blowing fretwork (David Lindley), a heart-warming Woody Guthrie Tribute (Joel Rafael, Jimmy LFave, Eliza Gilkyson, Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion), and poetry with fire, lyricism and grace (Bruce Robison & Kelly Willis). __On the classical side the Tetzlaff and St. Lawrence String Quartets made brightly burning chamber music; the China Phil and LA Phil, led by Long Yu and Gustavo Dudamel respectively, filled the Granada with pyrotechnics; Jennifer Koh's Bach cum video lit up Hahn Hall; a cool evening for the first concert at the new Libby Bowl to kick off the Ojai Music Fest was warmed by fiery performances by Dawn Upshaw, Claudio Ragazzi, Octavio Brunetti, Michael Ward-Bergeman and eighth blackbird; Opera Santa Barbara featured 2 one-acts – the saucily funny La Serva Padrona and the darkly funny Trouble in Paradise.; _the Music Academy of the West began its 64th Summer Festival with some of the hottest young atists-to-be. _DANCE – Started off the spring with some great moments at the 11th Ballet Competition of Santa Barbara; Motion Dance Theatre, as the name implies, blends the 2 arts to great effect, here with King Lear and Mysteries of Light for some arresting images; UCSB Dance's "Sky to the Ground" was dazzling, finishing with Jennifer Muller's high-energy Speeds; Lucinda Childs' Dance was a hypnotic mix of dance and film which also made for intriguing images; Curtis Studio of Dance's yearly concert was filled with color and highly motivated young dancers. ___ THEATER – UCSB Theater's mysterious and time-bending On the Verge and a stark, amusing and atmospheric Hamlet were done with heated passion and fine direction and acting.__ Ensemble Theatre Co. injected some real fire into a music theater classic with a crackling productiuon of The Fantastiks. Check out the promo video here. ____ODDS & ENDS: Rolly the gonzo Corgi had to slow down for a while after an operation to remove a growth from his left front paw - check out his fetching blue collar! Family portaits taken (between sessions of rhubarb pie-making) of Camerata Pacifica's indefatigable founder and flautist Adrian Spence and his brood on the occasion of daughter Erin's 21st birthday.
