HIGHLIGHTS FROM SPRING 2010 Here we go again! ___THEATER A really fine production of "The Glass Menagerie" by Ensemble Theatre Co. got the last quarter off a to grand start. _ UCSB Theater continued their theme of modernizing Greek myths with "Iphigenia 2.0," to great effect, and Speaking of Stories featured the inimitable T.C.Boyle. _ Upstarts Youth Theater presented another of Emma-Jane Huerta's wacky mash-ups of a well known story, this time Pinocchio had "No Strings Attached." _____DANCEFor most of April, Keigwin and Company were in residence @ the Lobero Theatre – check out the last behind-the-scenes "Bolero Santa Barbara" video of final dress (and a plethora of other videos & photos) @ DANCEworks 2010. ___ UCSB Dance gave us the aptly titiled "Move Move Move" – very dramatic, and great dancing too. ___ Compania Naçional de Danza's "Castrati" was harrowing yet beautiful to behold.___Curtis Dance Studios' "Wonderful World of Dance" celebrated the dances of many cultures in their fun 37th Annual Concert recital. ___MUSIC Terence Blanchard, Christian McBride & Inside Straight, Average White Band and the one and only Little Feat continued to confirm the Lobero Theatre's unparalleled suitablility to wear the crown for the Best Venue to see Great Music! __UCSB Arts & Lectures brought Elvis Costello solo, Baaba Maal's jumpin' Afro-melange, and the wonderously driving "Orchestrion," Pat Metheny's "mad scientist" pneumatic musical creation. __ Sings Like Hell took us from Bruce Cockburn solo with tubular bells to great sets by Dan Mangan, Warren Hood and the Hoodlums, to Joe Pug channeling a young Bobby Zimmerman, and the finely played eclectics of Or, the Whale. __On the classical front there was plenty to celebrate: Lang Lang with the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, Itzhak Perlman with Rohan de Silva, the Santa Barbara Choral Society's "Sea Symphony," Opera Santa Barbara's Macbeth, Richard O'Niell & Warren Jones playing a wonderful York Bowen piece (Cameratata Pacifica), The Santa Barbara Symphony's Mahler 5, and wrapping up June, the beginning of the 64th Summer Festival at the Music Academy of the West! Whoa, that was a LOT of music!
