HIGHLIGHTS FROM WINTER 2011:_ DANCE – From Appalachia to Mo(or)town: State Street Ballet collaborated with the Santa Barbara Symphony for William Soleau's new take on the Copeland/Graham classic "Appalchian Spring," same music, new choreography!___UCSB Arts & Lectures continued to bring world-class dance to SB with none other than Joffrey Ballet - sweet, sweet, sweet. DANCEworks Santa Barbara's third season was a journey into the eclectic mind of NY choreographer Doug Elkins culminating with "Mo(or)town/Redux" - based on Shakespeare's Othello set to the music of Motown. Check out my the month-long video & photo chronicle HERE. ___ MUSIC –Hot Swing and Hot Tuna, Joshua Bell, La Traviata, Jeff Bridges, Jake Shimabukuro: Whole lotta variety goin' on as Lobero Live! continued to bring top-notch artists like Mark O'Conner and his Hot Swing band, Judy Collins, John Schofield & Bill Frisell, McCoy Tyner and Hot Tuna w/Charlie Musselwhite.___Out at Campbell Hall some contrast in scale as the upright bass and the humble ukele were put through some big hoops as Esperanza Spalding captivated and Jake Shimbukuro dazzled. __Sings Like Hell celebrated its 200th show with a hot band led by T Bone Burnett backing Jeff Bridges for some fine Country Dude 'n Roll, ably assisted by Buddy Miller. Some great music happened at the Glen Phillips & Brett Dennen and Stephanie Finch & Chuck Prophet Band shows too! __Natasha Kislenko soloed with the Santa Barbara Symphony and Alisa Weilerstein with the St. Petersburg Phil for rousing performances; The Vienna Phil was masterfully conducted by Semyon Bychkov; Gilles Apap was uniquely wonderful with the SB Symphony. ___Opera Santa Barbara mounted a lavish and glorius La Traviata, their first fully staged opera by new Artistic Director José-Maria Condemi. ____THEATER – From Tricksters to Matches to Improv to Ghosts: UCSB Theater took us to the end of "civilization" with a torch story,Biederman's Match, and then to 18th century satire in She Stoops to Conquer. ___ Ensemble Theatre Co. had 2 really fine productions, Opus & Ghosts, exploring very different tragedies with superb acting and directing. ____For the always necessary spice of life, humor, how about 2nd City doing a hilarious improv workshop and Upstarts delirious Underland ? __
