Each quarterly update consists of a video slideshow (above) featuring a few highlights from many of the events I shot in the previous 3 months. Also featuring some new music by yours truly.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SPRING 2013: As always, variety was in abudance in our fair city, with dance, music and theater offerings of high calibre & great diversity, sure to please anyone with all things performance. More or less in the order they appear: Bobby McFerrin's inimitable vocal gymanastics took a back seat (a little bit) for his interpretations of his favourite "spritual" songs; State Street Ballet's spring showcase featured a new work by Peter Pucci set to iconic songs by Paul Simon, plus a scintillating variety of other works, new and old; Andras Schiff overwheled with his mastery of Bach; Philip Cokorinos was a terrific Don Pasquale in Opera Santa Barbara's final production of the season; Alvin Ailey Dance Theater soared to new heights with some hard and funky grooves; Sara Rhul's Eurydice got pumped in UCSB Theater Dept.'s innovative production; Brad Mehldau Trio and the The Bad Plus mesmerized, rocked, and swung; Ensemble Theatre's final production @ the Alhecama Theatre was a wonderful staging of Terrence McNally's Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune ; UCSB Theater also presented a fine and fiery Streetcar Named Desire in an intimate in-the-round staging; For Sings LIke Hell, The Eilen Jewell Band was hot & sassy @ the Lobero, and The Blasters blasted off at the Luke, SLH's temp venue during the Lobero Restoration Project; Tony Bennett showed he still has the pipes and the class to put on a great show in a rousing fundraiser for UCSB Arts & Lectures; Boxtales Theatre Co.'s Hero Twins featured their usual imaginative and exuberant telling of a tall tale with many layers of meaning; Curtis Studio of Dance's 40th Spring Showcase provided a little bit 'o this and a little bit 'o that; Camerata Pacifica's season-closer was filled with musical delights, ending with a bitter-sweet goodbye to principal violinist extraorcinaire Catherine Leonard; UCSB Dance's Spring Recital featured an eclectic mix of styles and visions for an enchanted evening; Linda Purl's acting in Joan Didion's harrowing The Year of Magical Thinking was a marvel to experience; American Dance & Music brought it's free & fun Dance, Up Close & Cultural to the community at the Carrillo Rec Center; The Music Academy of the West began it's 66th Summer Festival with another crop of extraordinary Fellows & Faculty from around the world for an intense 8 week immersion in all things classical music; The Santa Barbara Symphony joined forces with soprano Jennifer Black, mezzo Tamara Mumford, the SB Choral Society and the Quire of Voyces for a rousing and moving Mahler's Resurrection ; ___ ENDs, but not ODD – The 90th birthday of Larry Crandell, Santa Barbara's favourite MC and fundraiser – naturally, it was a fundraiser, at the SB Yacht Club, for the SB City College Foundation. ___Also a couple of master classes givien by Guy Fishman & Anne Black of the Hayden and Handel Society for students of the UCSB Music Dept.___State Street Ballet's Summer Intensive for young dancers from around the country. _Don't miss slideshows 1, 2 & 3 of the beginning of the LOBERO THEATRE'S AMBITIOUS RESTORATION PROJECT making some much needed upgrades to the seating, the bathrooms and the entrance area. Watch out for lots more as the project progresses.
